In which Category of Trimatastha Brahmins does Havyakas come under?
We are about to finalize the marriage of my daughter with a Havyaka groom. We belong to Smartha Badaganadu. Some say Havyakas are Smartha’s, but some don’t accept it. Could you please clarify it.?
In a broad sense, Smartha’s are the followers of Advaita Philosophy of Sri Shankaracharya. Different brahmin groups that existed in south India were united by Sri Shankaracharya and are commonly called as Smartha’s. Even Havyaka’s or Havika’s are also the followers of Sri. Shankaracharya and are grouped as Smartha.
Traditionally different Smartha groups originated from different regions in the past. There are over 100+ sub-groups who follow Sri.Shankaracharya with different traditions, Culture, Food, Langauge, Accent, Main / Basic occupation, Dress, etc.
Havyaka’s are mainly concentrated in the Shimoga, Udupi, Coorg, North, and South Canara District. Since they speak Kannada with a different accent (called Havyaka Kannada or Havyaka Langauge ) and follow a slightly different tradition and culture from other Smartha groups of that region. Probably because of it people think that Havyakas form a different Brahmin group altogether.
Havyaka’s are mainly purohits and agriculturists in the past. Havyakas are people who are known for hard work and sharp mind with soft in nature.
